Lake Wainamu is one of the most unique places I have been to in the Auckland region. This area is surrounded by black sand dunes, like an inverse oasis in the middle of a lush forested area. I can honestly say that walking here was an utter joy as I have never seen anything like it in my life. If you want to go somewhere completely different and take in some truly unique scenic views - this is the place for you.
Located 45 minutes west of Central Auckland in the winding roads of the Waitakeres is this quirky hidden gem of a place. There are two options for the the walk, a half hour wander to the lake itself, or the full 6 kilometer loop so perfect for both entry level and experienced walkers (though if you're looking for a challenge this one isn't for you).
