Bringing nature in when you can't get out.

This afternoon its raining. I am sitting in my room with my pine tree candle burning, my camping tea cup full of oolong and a big bottle full of freesias oozing their almost springtime scent into my room. Part of what makes my room so comfortable and homey is the little bits of wilderness and nature I hoard and collect to remind me of the rugged beauty outside of my walls, my office and my city. Part of our humanity is our inherent part of nature and its essential that we take time to treasure and remember that, but its not always practical to get out into the woods and mountains. So how can we bring the wilderness into our homes and offices?

1) Fill your abode and office with living things

You might not be able to run off to the woods or swim in the cold salty sea but that doesn't mean you cant have a home bursting with green life. Freshen your mind and air with plants. Fill terrariums with moss and ferns, hang pots of greenery and embrace those cacti - reminding yourself that we are more than beings in brick walls and concrete buildings.

2) Fill a vision board with peaces of the wild

Find photos of the wild that inspire and invigorate you and store them up for when you feel claustrophobic and stuck. I have a whole wilderness corner of my giant vision board at home and a Pinterest board of woods and oceans for when I'm on the go and get itchy feet for something more wild than the city.

3) Collect Mementos

Treasure the moments you can spend in nature by bringing home little precious mementos. Keep the feeling of the outdoors with you by saving your autumn leaves, your pine cones and your sea polished stones.

4) Flowers and Greenery

Fresh flowers and lush greenery are the things that never cease to cheer me up when I'm feeling a bit of city cabin fever. They are a symbol of hope and joy and a representation of life from the forest and the garden. I always make sure I have a jar or bottle of fresh flowers (even if they are just wildflowers from the side of the road) decorating my desk.

6) Watch and listen to the wild

Talented cinematographers have blessed us with amazing wildlife documentaries. Sometimes we can get stuck in our own little worlds and shells, forgetting the brilliance, ingenuity and power of creatures and plants on our very own planet. These documentaries can draw us out of this space, reminding us we are truly in a living planet.

7) Be aware of the light and seasons

As humans we are part of nature and have bodies effected by weather, light and surroundings. Being aware of the light and lunar cycles help us tune our bodies to the seasons, enabling us to live more healthy and adapted lives.
