Celebrating Winter: ways you can enjoy the cold spell

Head to the coast

The beach isn't just for summer. It's still there when the temperature gets colder, and it only gets more rugged and dramatic. Pack a thermos of hot chai, a rug and a notebook and take yourself out on a romantic date for one.

Take up an indoor activity

The cold and/or rain shouldn't keep you from moving and stretching your body. Find a indoor activity you enjoy and find a workshop to keep you motivated. This winter I have booked in for early Saturday Ashtanga Yoga workshop but if that's not your cup of tea there's squash, indoor soccer and dance.

Get through that reading list

Books are great for lifting your mood in the cold, drizzly weather. Make yourself a list (Goodreads is a great place to organize one) and try and get through as many as you can.

Find new wildernesses

Explore new forests and lakes around where you live. If its raining take a parka and thermos of hot chocolate. Bring your camera and your sense of awe and wander, embracing the beauty of the winter around you.

Have a fireside wine tasting

Go to a vineyard with a roaring fireplace and enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting with your nearest and dearest. Laugh, relax and enjoy the warmth of the fire and the delicious flavours and aromas of fine wine.
