Last week I got the very wonderful news from my physio that my knee is all fixed. I can now get back to long walks and running, which is some of the best news I have had this month. I have really missed getting challenging intensive exercise and as much as swimming and yoga are fun, I am glad to get me some variety back into my fitness regime.
To celebrate this wonderful news I am introducing a new feature to the blog. I will be sharing some beautiful walking trails in and nearby the Auckland region along with some pictures of my experience and some notes about the tracks. If you enjoy walks or want to take up walking this should be a helpful tool for you, and if not, enjoy the pretty pictures!
This weekend I walked the rugged and breathtaking Te Henga walkway. Starting near the windswept and rough Bethells beach the trail meanders its way to the Waitakeres. Its a clear and straightforward track with priceless views, unfortunately my camera wasn't well charged so I only got some pictures of Bethells beach itself. The great thing about this track is beginners can stick to the Bethells to O'Neill Bay route (1 1/2 hours there and back) and enjoy the rugged seashore and greenery without needing to take the full 3 hours (one way) walk. I opted for this one as I was trekking to a nearby lake later that day, but I will be coming back to do the whole track later this year with my camera fully charged.
I thoroughly recommend giving Bethell's beach a good explore before or after your walk. Its sand dunes are home to the endangered NZ dotterel, a beautiful sea bird which has had significant conservation efforts in Te Henga. I was over the moon to see and photograph several of the birds. It's always such a treat to see rare species in the wild.
Also for a heads up, make sure you are armed with cash. The local cafe has very cleverly set up an adorable portable cafe and food truck at the beach and, can I say, after a long walk on a cold, windy day there is nothing like the comfort of a warm, fluffy soy latte.
