My Rotorua Holiday: Part 1

Everytime I go on a long weekend trip I fall in love with my country all over again. I am so blessed to be in a place where my beloved city life is only minutes drive away from my beloved outdoor walks and hikes. In only a few hours of driving you can pass beaches, lakes, breathtaking mountains and lush forests. This weekend I did a wee trip with a dear friend from Auckland to Rotorua, via Hamilton. We packed so much fun in and I was yet again struck, with awe, at the beauty that is around me.

The Towering Redwoods:

Almost every winter holidays when I was growing up my family and I would stay in Rotorua and hike the many tracks of its Redwood forests. I love the woodland feel that these gorgeous towering Canadian trees give, and the filtering effect of the light through the trees. This forest is also quite unique as it interspersed with native New Zealand temperate rainforest and geothermal pools. It is well worth a visit.

The Blue Baths

I think its safe to say this is my new favourite piece of New Zealand architecture. I love the Art Deco/Spanish Mission style which complements the bright turquoise baths so well. I feel like Gatsby would have thrown one of his parties here...

Rotorua Museum

Rotorua Museum is fascinating, and slightly creepy. The majority of the museum has displays surrounding the ancient healing bath house and sanitarium constructed on the grounds. They have an eerie 'haunted' basement which just gave me the creeps but it was fascinating to learn about the different therapies they used 50-100 years ago.

Orakei korako

This curious thermal wonderland is only accessible by boat on the glassy Waikato River. We went early on the first day of winter surrounded by crisp icy air and rolling fog. This was certainly a once in a lifetime experience hiking the rocky hillside to see geysers, silicon terraces, ancient burial grounds and the only geothermal cave outside of Italy. The sights were so enthralling I couldn't stop taking photos!

Thats only the first part of my trip, and that alone was so exciting. I can't wait to share more of my little adventure with you all...
