Valentines Day: Lantern Festival

This valentines day I had a date with my Mum, in that my man is in another country. We went to the Auckland Lantern Festival and it was a truly delightful experience. There were lights everywhere, in the trees, as sculpture round the park and attached to lamp posts. They were multiple colours and shaped as people, animals, flowers and much more. It was magical and fascinating and a truly perfect way to spend my Friday night.

The food was great, it made me really miss living in Asia and has motivated me to look into doing an Asia trip at the end of the year (so exciting). I had scallop dumplings and cuttlefish balls - the best kind of festival finger food, forget hot dogs and candy floss. I also had a huge bubble tea, one of my favourite drinks.

I have vivid memories of walking to the bubble tea stall with my dad in the buzzing Singapore evenings. The air was hazy and dense, there was a constant hubbub of busy people and there was nothing like the sweet tea flavour with the soft gelatinous surprise of the sago pearls.

The lanterns were really gorgeous and creative and it got me thinking. I really don't use pretty lights enough in my home. This year it is my goal to get some more pretty lights and moroccan lanterns to decorate my house and make it brighter.

I also got my name written in chinese calligraphy. The women doing it were so skilled and did it so fast. Chinese script is truly beautiful.

There were also dragon dancers and beautiful stilt walkers in elaborate dragon costumes and so much more but I only had my phone so I didn't take a lot of photos. If your in the Auckland region this weekend I would highly recommend checking it out. The festival was so much fun.
