Tea time: Boh Seri Songket - Mango

In my experience a flavoured tea they can either be outstandingly good or outstandingly bad. This tea, however, differed from this typical pattern. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, it just wasn't outstanding.

It is always a bonus when a range of tea offers both teabag and leaf tea. I'm not a fan of teabags but I understand lots of tea drinkers like their convenience.  BOH tea is grown in the beautiful Cameron highlands of Malaysia, one of the prettiest places I know. The Seri Songket range by BOH is characterised by beautiful gift boxes, inspired by the traditional Malaysian gold embroidered fabric, Songket, and is made up by a variety of flavoured black teas.

Today I tried the mango flavoured tea from this range. I had high expectations as I love mango and I am aware of its prevalence and importance in the regions that this tea originated from; While walking through the Malaysian night markets the shopper experiences stalls laden with all variety of this stoned fruit, some small, some large, some uniformly yellow both inside and outside and other (my favourite black gold variety) a dark forest green on the outside and a juicy tangerine colour within.

The tea base for this blend was beautiful, very delicate, lacking the strong bitter tannins so often experienced in black leaf teas. The mango flavour expressed the sweetness of tropical mangoes which complemented the tea leaves well, however, I had an expectation of the mango's characteristic tart bite cutting through the velvety tea. This didn't happen, so I was slightly disappointed. Nevertheless - it was a pleasant cup of tea and I look forward to the prospect of trying other BOH teas.
