Scenes From The Weekend: Laotian Food, Tea Parties and Cherry Blossoms

On Friday night I decided to try out the evening menu at my new favourite eating spot, Bolaven, and my word, have I fallen in love with Laotian food. Mikayla and I dug in to copious amounts of food and enjoyed every dish! We didn't even have room for dessert. I was impressed with how healthy everything on the menu was, so it was pretty much a guilt free experience. Everything is gluten free, dairy free and free range and packed with glorious flavours like star anise, chilli, beautiful stocks and broths and packed with herbs.

Eating at Bolaven really inspired me to return to my 'roots' of South East Asian cooking. It may seem funny coming from a Caucasian New Zealander but my first experiences of really enjoying cooking and eating where in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. A significant portion of my childhood was spent living in Malaysia and traveling to its surrounding countries and this is where I really grew my foodie nature. In the coming months I will be introducing more Internationally (mostly Asian) inspired dishes that are healthy and dietary requirement friendly. Along this note, I am also excited to announce big changes are coming to Quite Simply Batty. Keep an eye and an ear out!

On Saturday some of my friends threw a creatively and beautiful executed historically themed high tea. The tea was delicious and all the small details, down to silverware and bunting were a real treat. I also got to dress up, which was a good laugh, so overall it was a brilliant afternoon. I also managed to be the object of amusement to several customers at the local dairy (corner-store) as I ran in to get camera batteries while dressed in a complete Jane Austen themed get-up.

Today was mostly restful and reflective however I managed to squeeze in some quality time with my brother. I had fun helping him assemble some outfits for the spring season and we had an explore of Cornwall Park which is currently bursting with spring colour and baby farm animals, a total must see at this time of year.

So I'm wondering... what were your favourite flavours and foods growing up? In what way have they shaped your tastes now?
